Social Workers
Professional social workers are concerned with social problems,
their causes, their solutions and their human impacts. Social workers work with
individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities, as members of a
profession which is committed to social justice and human rights, although
Reichert points out that social workers can not define social justice (Reichert,
2003). Their approach is to consider the individual within the social
environment.Social service or social work job, whether in mental health,
substance abuse, children and youth, medical social work, criminal justice,
domestic violence, counseling, community organizing and outreach, EAP,
mentoring, homelessness or a variety of other human service areas.Social workers
form relationships with people. As adviser, advocate, counsellor or listener, a
social worker helps people to live more successfully within their local
communities by helping them find solutions to their problems. Social work also
involves engaging not only with clients themselves but their families and
friends as well as working closely with other organisations including the
police, NHS, schools and probation service. There is a specific status associated
with the job title "social worker". Social workers are professionally qualified
staff who assess the needs of service users and plan the individual packages of
care and support that best help them. Becoming a social worker involves taking
an honours degree in social work and registering with the General Social Care
Council. Almost all social workers start their careers with experience in social
care.Social workers often work with people experiencing crisis or people who are
socially excluded. Their aim is to provide support to enable service users to
help themselves. They maintain professional relationships with service users,
acting as a guide, advocate or as a critical friend.Social workers work in a
variety of settings within a framework of relevant legislation and procedures,
supporting individuals, families and groups within the community. Settings
include service users' homes, schools, hospitals and other public sector and
voluntary organisations.Qualified social work professionals are often supported
by social work assistants. They also work closely with other health and social
care staff.
Professional social workers have a strong tradition of working for social
justice, and of refusing to recreate unequal social structures. This means going
beyond state sponsored practices which merely cater for individual needs, in
order to transform society as a whole. Social work maintains this radical kernel
and today many social workers internationally have strong connections with
social and political movements for the emancipation of the oppressed.
The main tasks of professional social workers are case management (linking
clients with agencies and programs that will meet their psychosocial needs),
medical social work, counseling (psychotherapy), human services management,
social welfare policy analysis, community organizing, advocacy, teaching (in
schools of social work), and social science research.Professional social workers
work in a variety of settings, including: non-profit or public social service
agencies, grassroots advocacy organizations, hospitals, hospices, community
health agencies, schools, faith-based organizations, and even the military.
Other social workers work as psychotherapists, counselors, or mental health
practitioners, normally working in coordination with psychiatrists,
psychologists, or other medical professionals. Additionally, some social workers
have chosen to focus their efforts on social policy or academic research into
the practice or ethics of social work. The emphasis has varied among these task
areas by historical era and country, and some of these areas have been the
subject of controversy as to whether they are properly part of social work's
mission.Learn Social Workers, SCHOOLS Social Workers, COLLEGES Social Workers,
